Background to the materials   These English language teaching materials are the result of a 5 year voluntary project in Nicaragua. Modules 1 and 2 teach basic language and skills and are suitable for beginners and false beginners (those who have learnt some English but who cannot communicate in English) and are relevant for secondary schools. Modules 3 - 6 focus more on rural and community tourism, covering topics such as Describe your community, Talk about national and local history, Homestay, Health, Riding, Protect your environment, Bird watching, Mini-beasts, Forests, Planning for visitors, Telling stories and Visitor expectations. They are suitable for elementary to pre-intermediate students, particularly of tourism and guiding.

Teaching methodology
The approach is communicative and task based. The building blocks of grammar are covered as needed but the language input is structured around communicative situations that learners may find themselves in. While many of the early examples are from Central / South America, in later units the examples are more universal.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       The materials comprise: The students' material; the recordings, which provide models of pronunication in different accents and plenty of listening practice; the teachers' notes consisting of general ESP teaching guidance in Spanish or in English and Unit notes for Modules 1 - 3 and Modules 4 - 6; and the Modules 4 - 6 answer key.

Rural community tourism projects These materials were developed and used in Nicaragua but they will be useful in other Latin American countries where rural communities are developing  tourism projects. The tasks can easily be modified and extended to reflect the specific contexts of different countries of the region. The software used to design Modules 4 - 6 is Publisher which means we can work with organisations in other countries to tailor the materials to your specific needs.

‘Fit for purpose’.The materials have been compiled by professionals. However, as this is a voluntary project, they have been printed and recorded by volunteers with minimal resources which means there are probably small errors and inconsistencies. I apologise for these, but the materials are ‘fit for purpose’.

Hint: When using a CD player, if you keep your finger on the fast forward / backward button then, instead of jumping tracks, the CD player goes through the track second by second so you can locate exactly where you want to be.
