New in 2010 was a scholarship, funded by returned volunteers, for a young woman who first learnt English through the English with Miraflor voluntary project and is now studying English at University.
Six young women are continuing their studies. In addition, one of our computer skills teachers recently completed a computer maintenance course; the other is on maternity leave.

The student for English is Arielka Torres Cornejo

Three young women are studying to teach: in primary school, Xiomara Bravo from El Robledal and Danelia Gamez from El Sontule and at secondary school, Esquipula Ubeda from Puertas Azules.

Dora Romero continues studying psychology and Egna Castillo Systems Engineering.

We began giving scholarships in 2005 with funds raised by a volunteer from Sweden who visits the community each summer and raises money to support a range of initiatives . Tertiary scholarships are between US$120 and 180 / year (£125/ C$3600). Scholars receive their funds every two months, subject to certain conditions, such as supporting their community through some activity and showing satisfactory attendance and grades. Community support is a way of sharing the benefits that a scholarship gives an individual.

The scholarships cover about half the costs so we assess the ability of students to fund the remainder. Courses vary in duration from 1-5 years. Sadly, not all students complete their studies. Two new students for 2010 dropped out, and two who had just one year to complete never had the family circumstances to complete.
