Scholarship students
New in 2010 are scholarships for two young women who first learnt English through the English with Miraflor voluntary project and are now going to study English at University.
There is one other new scholarship, while six young women are continuing their studies. In addition, one of our computer skills teachers recently completed a computer maintenance course; the other is on maternity leave.

The students for English are Anielka Torres Cornejo and Yorlenis Castillo Rugada

Eling Junieth Salguera Centeno starts a Civil Engineering course while Mabel Sobalvarro and Fanni Sobalvarro will finish their book keeping courses this year.

Three young women are studying to teach: in primary school, Xiomara Bravo from El Robledal and Danelia Gamez from El Sontule and at secondary school, Esquipula Ubeda from Puertas Azules.

Dora Romero continues studying psychology and Egna Castillo Systems Engineering.

We began giving scholarships in 2005 with funds raised by returned volunteers. Tertiary scholarships in 2010 are between US$120 and 180 / year (£125/ C$3600). Scholars receive their funds every two months, subject to certain conditions. For instance they must support their community through some activity and show satisfactory attendance and grades. Community support is a way of sharing the benefits that a scholarship gives an individual.

We aim to fund up to half of their costs so we assess the ability of students to fund the remainder. Courses vary in duration from 1-5 years.
