Volunteering
The NEST Trust personnel no longer act as a link between communities and volunteers. We share here what we learnt between 2002 and 2008. The information may help you assess your suitability as a volunteer. Click on communities above for contact details of those we worked with.

From experience, we know that it's best for volunteers and students if you can stay for around six months. However, not everyone can take that much time off (though it is really worthwhile!) so some communities may be willing to have you for just 3-4 months. In our opinion, less than this really isn't satisfactory for either side.

Are you suitable as a long-term volunteer teacher? Yes, if you:

  • can (preferably) teach for at least 4 - 6 months
  • speak reasonable Spanish
  • have a zest for life, flexibility, creativity, and the ability to live simply.
  • are a good communicator
  • preferably, have a TEFL qualification / teaching experience

You also need to be reasonably physically fit, as there maybe a fair amount of walking between family, classrooms and buses.

The more Spanish you speak the easier you will find it and the more you can integrate into the local community.
